Can $7 buy happiness?

DSCF6109_Breakfast.JPG - 2008:04:29 07:05:17
This was my breakfast this morning - strawberry and honey frozen yogurt.

I found the ice cream maker at Goodwill for $7.

And it's even healthy! Mostly.

Belated breaking news coverage

I suppose it was too much to expect the protests wouldn't come to the U campus. These pictures were taken on the 16th.

The Other Reason Why Cowboys Wear Boots

Album

So I've returned from my too short trip to TX with 3 pounds of premier pecans, pictures of rattlesnake heads, and two chigger bites.

If you're not familiar with chiggers (aka no see ums) they're kind of like mosquitoes, but much worse. For about four days after being bit it itches so much you'd think a small alien life form is going to crawl out of your ankle.

It was totally worth it anyway - it's wildflower season in central TX right now. And of course, there's family. :) And fried okra. You can't say if you like okra until you've had it fried.

And, it was a good reminder that sometimes to find the exotic you don't need to go very far from home. I happened to be in town the same weekend as the rattlesnake roundup - that's when the ranchers let the rattlesnake hunters on their property to cart away the rattlesnakes. Some of them are brought to Brownwood Coliseum where good ol' TX men demonstrate how you kill a rattlesnake (very carefully) and then skin it.

Fun fact: Rattlesnake heads can bite you for up to 30 minutes until after they've been cut off. It's really creepy. . .during the demonstration the four heads on the corner of the tarp attempted to slither, sniffed the air and even tried to bite the handlers.

Taiwan

We got back from Taiwan yesterday and are still adjusting. . .after almost 22 hours of travel we were pretty exhausted. We tried valiantly to stay awake after we arrived at 6 am in the morning - but fell asleep at about 4:30. I woke up at 1 am. My body still isn't sure what time it is. :)

The trip was worth it, though. Taiwan is a beautiful country, but what really made it a wonderful place to visit were the Taiwanese people. They put up with our few mispronounced words in Chinese, and when that failed, worked with our gestures. And whenever we were lost or needed help, there was always someone willing.

As you can probably guess, I took way too many pictures. Be sure to checkout the videos.

This one is a video of the doorbell on one of our hotel rooms. And this is a video of the cross walk signs in Taipei. The little man walks calmly for the first twenty seconds, speeds up at ten seconds then begin to runs frantically at five seconds.

p.s. Thanks to these two sites for giving me the starting points for getting captions working through Apache Gallery.
